CLRA National 2021 IN-TECH (Group) Reclamation Award Recipient: Nova Scotia Lands Inc.

 

Since its establishment in 2006, Nova Scotia Lands Inc. has done a diverse array of reclamation projects throughout Nova Scotia.  These projects have improved receiving waters, restored community access to previously degraded land, protected resources, and employed innovative technologies. The engagement of the employees with several Nova Scotia academic institutions has spawned dozens of research projects, numerous field trips, assisted professors in developing new university courses and course material, provided the source material for more than a hundred publications and presentations and counting, and supported more than 40 graduate degrees (Masters, Ph.D. and postgraduate level).  

Some of their nominated projects include but are not limited to, 

-Sydney Tar Ponds Agency (STPA) and Coke Oven Clean Up Project 

-Boat Harbour Clean Up 

-Abandoned Historic Mines Reclamation Projects 

-Demolition and Brownfield Redevelopment of the Former Sydney Steel Corporation (SYSCO)

About the IN-TECH (Group) Reclamation Award

The IN-TECH Reclamation Award (Formerly the Noranda Land Reclamation Award) is one of three prestigious awards of the Canadian Land Reclamation Association / Association Canadienne de Réhabilitation des Sites Dégradés (CLRA/ACRSD). This award celebrates innovative techniques that advance the practice of reclamation in Canada within any sector of industry (i.e mining, forestry, oil & gas) .

The award is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions of the nominee in the areas of professional practice, teaching, research and/or regulatory development as they relate to innovation within the profession of land reclamation in Canada. Nominees should be widely recognized for their contributions in the field of land reclamation. The award will be presented to an individual person.

For the purpose of this award, the word reclamation will include facets of research, planning, developing, implementing, executing and teaching programs to establish conditions on disturbed or stressed land that will make the land useful.
