CLRA Alberta is proud to give back through various initiatives that support important organizations dedicated to land conservation and sustainability.
Western Sky Land Trust is a non-profit organization focused on conserving and protecting the natural and cultural heritage of southern Alberta. Their mission involves the permanent preservation of land through methods such as accepting donations of land, holding conservation easements, and raising funds to purchase properties. With an emphasis on conserving watersheds for their agricultural, natural, scenic, and recreational values, Western Sky collaborates closely with landowners to safeguard these spaces for future generations.
We are excited to partner with Project Forest on the Siksika Nation Community Shelterbelt Program. For over a century, the federal government has provided trees to farmers for planting shelterbelts, which protect against harsh weather and enhance crop growth. Unfortunately, First Nations like Siksika Nation have historically been excluded from accessing these vital resources.
To address this gap, Project Forest is working to plant shelterbelts around homes, communities, and agricultural fields on the Siksika Nation, the second-largest reserve in Canada. These multi-row shelterbelts, which will include food-bearing and medicinal plants, enhance privacy, shield against severe weather, and create spaces for traditional land use activities like berry-picking. This five-year collaboration seeks to improve the community’s natural infrastructure while addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
Through our support of these projects, CLRA Alberta is dedicated to fostering a sustainable and resilient environment for all Albertans.
