RECLAMATION OF LEGACY SITES

Three SHELL sites showcasing:
Project management efficiencies demonstrating timely reclamation of sites from wellbore abandonment to restoration. A reclamation certificate on Forested lands, with natural recovery infive years from date of abandonment to restoration including bio remediation of 25,000 m3 of contaminated drilling waste (sump) material.
Reclamation under the new 2010 criteria; natural recovery and use of existing materials for revegetation, putting the dispositions back into the Forest Management Agreement (FMA) timber banks, and consulting with the regulators for guidance.
Risk management of historical drilling sumps with Eco-Nomics applied for sustainable remediation. Putting a dollar value and defensible sustainable measurement to the benefits of Risk Management and selective remediation techniques, rather than the traditional “dig and dump” method, in consultation with Environment and Sustainable Resources Development (ESRD).
The Nexen Balzac Sour Gas Plant:
The plant is in the process of being decommissioned. Currently, the insulation and asbestos are being removed from the facility to prepare for demolition activities set to begin in 2013. The tour and presentation will outline the process used to get to this point, the lessons learned to date, and review the current planning process for remediation and reclamation of a 50 year old asset. In addition to the plant being shut down, Nexen is undertaking the demolition, abandonment and reclamation of 60-100 wells and facilities associated with the plant operation. The tour will provide an overview of undertaking a project of this magnitude as it becomes a much more common process in today’s industry.
